Fix Telegram Voice & Video Calls Over VPN
Telegram calls are more sensitive to latency than messaging. Here's how to optimize your VPN for the best call experience.
Why Calls Are Different from Messages
Text messages can tolerate 500ms+ of latency — you won't notice the delay. But voice and video calls need under 150ms of latency to feel natural. A poorly configured VPN can push latency above that threshold.
5 Steps to Better Telegram Calls
1. Use WireGuard Protocol
WireGuard has the lowest latency of any VPN protocol. It's designed for speed and uses modern cryptography that's faster to process. Switch to WireGuard (or NordLynx / Lightway equivalent) in your VPN settings.
2. Connect to the Nearest Server
For calls, server proximity is critical. Every 1000km adds roughly 5-10ms of latency. Connect to the closest server in a country where Telegram is available.
3. Use a Wired Connection
Wi-Fi adds latency and jitter. If call quality matters, use an Ethernet cable on desktop. On mobile, a strong 4G/5G signal is better than weak Wi-Fi.
4. Disable P2P Calls in Telegram
Go to Telegram Settings → Privacy → Calls → Peer-to-Peer and set to "Nobody." This forces calls through Telegram's relay servers, which can be more stable when using a VPN.
5. Close Background Apps
Streaming, downloads, and other apps competing for bandwidth can degrade call quality. Close unnecessary apps during important calls.
