Digital Privacy for Telegram Users

A VPN protects your connection, but true privacy requires a layered approach. Here's a practical guide for Telegram users who take privacy seriously.

Layer 1: Network Privacy (VPN)

A VPN is the foundation of Telegram privacy. It:

  • Hides your IP address from Telegram and your ISP
  • Encrypts all traffic between your device and the VPN server
  • Prevents your ISP from logging your Telegram usage
  • Bypasses censorship in blocked countries

See our VPN recommendations for the best options.

Layer 2: Account Security

Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Go to Settings → Privacy → Two-Step Verification. Add a strong password in addition to the SMS code.

Use a Private Phone Number

Telegram requires a phone number. For better privacy, consider using a secondary number or a virtual number service.

Configure Privacy Settings

Go to Settings → Privacy and adjust:

  • Phone Number → "Nobody" (prevents other users from seeing your number)
  • Last Seen → "Nobody" or "My Contacts"
  • Profile Photo → "My Contacts"
  • Forwarded Messages → "Nobody" (removes link to your account when messages are forwarded)
  • Calls → P2P set to "Nobody" (forces calls through Telegram relays)

Layer 3: Message Privacy

Use Secret Chats for Sensitive Conversations

Secret Chats provide end-to-end encryption and aren't stored on Telegram's servers. Use them for anything truly private.

Enable Self-Destruct Timers

In Secret Chats, set messages to automatically delete after a set time (1 second to 1 week).

Disable Auto-Download

Go to Settings → Data and Storage and disable auto-download for media. This prevents unwanted content from being stored on your device.

Layer 4: Device Security

  • Lock the app — Enable passcode lock in Telegram settings
  • Keep your OS updated — security patches matter
  • Check active sessions — Settings → Devices. Terminate any you don't recognize
  • Enable screen lock — use biometrics or a strong PIN on your device

Layer 5: Operational Security

  • Don't join suspicious groups — group membership is metadata
  • Be careful with bots — bots can collect your user ID and message history
  • Don't share location — disable live location sharing
  • Think before forwarding — forwarded messages carry your account link unless disabled
